ABOUT HWH

Welcome to Health with Hope, your guide for eating, moving, and living well!

I’m Hope Anderson, dietitian, foodie, creator and voice behind Health with Hope.

Wellness At Your Fingertips:
This site is designed to be your personal health and wellness portal. Everything is “well” considered from delicious wholesome recipes, to clarity on the latest scientific health studies, sound advice on how to know and become the expert of your own body. This is where nutrition myths end and real health information begins.

Our Philosophy:
HWH’s nutrition philosophy is simple:  Ditch the diet and opt for a variety of whole, nutrient-dense foods — the more colors, the better!
Rigid, black-and-white thinking about food and health often creates a vicious cycle of crash dieting followed by a binge-fest. The body is biologically programmed to respond to restrictive diets this way due to our fight-or-flight response, leaving us feeling defeated and hungry for a better approach.

Food is essential.  We need it in order to live, grow, and survive. It is used to celebrate and mourn, to evoke memories and strike business deals, and to care for loved ones. Food has cultural, social, emotional, and physical ties.  Food is universal. Nothing more connects us than food.

What About Food Makes Us So Confused?
As with most complicated matters, it really is a multitude of reasons:
  • The $64 billion weight loss industry nudges us to villainize carbs, fear fat, avoid gluten, and eat our weight in grams of lean protein.  We have put ourselves into ketosis “fat-burning” mode, counted enough carbs and points, taken too many metabolism-supporting supplements, and microwaved enough healthy frozen dinners by now to know these tactics are ineffective.

  • Yet another camp, the food industry, has played a role in growing our country’s waistlines to epic proportions.  Food is literally everywhere we look.  Case in point, pick up office products at any office supply store, and you are forced to walk down a grocery aisle fully stocked with candy and junk food on the way to the register.

  • And let’s not forget the media. Both the social and mainstream media rampantly spread nutrition misinformation, shaping our very relationships with food and our bodies.  From the colleague who’s lost 5 pounds “detoxing” to the fitness model you follow on social media, everyone is a self-proclaimed nutrition expert.  This is not to diminish the efforts made by health enthusiasts in promoting better eating and healthy lifestyles, but a Registered Dietitian (RD) is the industry expert of the food and nutrition world and the most trusted source for sound nutrition advice.

It’s time to not be stumped by what to eat and shift from a one-dimensional idea of nutrition to a more elastic one.  HWH’s approach to health is different:  we serve simple advice on eating well and believe in order to get back to the basics of nutrition and wellness, we must get back into the kitchen.

The HWH Manifesto

We believe...
  • No universal “ideal diet” exists
  • Food is meant to be mindfully enjoyed
  • Eating should be energy-giving
  • Cutting carbs should only be done with a knife
  • In practicing Hara hatchi bi, the Japanese idea of stopping at 80% full
  • The body is an advanced communicator

HWH advocates a whole lifestyle approach— we believe the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.  The body is an intricate, fascinating machine with systems working together to sustain life. Wellness is a union of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.

HWH is on a mission to empower you to maximize your health so you can savor every moment.  We are all in pursuit of the most delicious, well-rounded, and healthiest version of life.   So pour a cup of coffee, settle into your favorite nook, and come join us—  let’s feast for the health of it.
